T.S. Smith and Sons
T.S. Smith and Sons was started in 1907 by Thomas Sterling Smith with a farm of about 60 acres.
The business was incorporated in 1959, and today has grown to more than 800 acres plus leased property. The farm is now one of only two orchards remaining in the state of Delaware.
The business has been passed down from father to son, and is now run by Thomas Sterling's great-grandsons, Matthew W. Smith as President and CEO, and his brother Thomas Smith, as Secretary and Treasurer. Their father, Charles Walton Smith Jr. (Walt) is still very involved in the business, as is Matt's wife, Sherri Smith.
Like most family farms, everyone pitches in where needed, but Matt's priorities are the planting, harvesting, and cultivating of produce and fruit. Thomas's main focus include the packing house, the store, and overseeing the orchards and the wholesale operation. Sherri maintains the new greenhouse added this year, and is responsible for the harvesting of the cantaloupes, watermelon, and pumpkins. There are also many other valuable employees that help with the day to day work of running the farm.
In addition to apples and peaches, the farm produces asparagus, cantaloupes, watermelon, pumpkins, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, nectarines, sweet corn, soybeans, and a variety of bedding plants and flowers. Each year, the family plans to add new activities for guests, which include hayrides through the orchard, and the new pumpkin patch, when time permits.
